Ender and Katniss' first meeting

Ender Wiggin from Ender’s Game
Katniss Everdeen from Mockingjay

The ruins of district 12 was all that was left, of the once very poor district. The only buildings that were still intact after the bombing from the Capitol were the three victor’s houses. Katniss Everdeen lived in her home, with the smell of ash everyday, the ground always looking as if it was covered with snow. As she walked around her home, memories would always flood into her head of the days before the bombing and the days before she became a Hunger Games victor. She remembered the days of hunting with Gale, and the memories of her beloved sister Prim. Today was a special occasion, her distant cousin, Ender Wiggin was coming today to see her.  Ender was coming from a leave from the colony that he now lived in, located in the home of the buggers.
Katniss was the first one to the Mellark bakery. She sat on a piece of wood from a tree that fell down a while ago and waited for Ender. A man came up looking all around, observing everything, he saw the Mellark bakery and saw that it was now in ashes, he  saw Katniss sitting on a piece of tree he smiled to himself. Katniss saw Ender and walked up to him, her face looking stern. “Hi Katniss” said Ender. Katniss gave a small smile and looked down at the ground. “I have heard so many things about you since you won the Hunger Games. How are you doing?”. “ I’m okay, I am glad I am not living in district 13, I hate living underground. I didn’t like living in the battle school, now when I come to earth it feels very weird to me. So you're a genius? Good job on defeating the buggers, we thought that they were the worst threat to our world, thought if we defeated them we would all live in peace and harmony... of course we were wrong. It seems as if both of our situations forced us to be treated horribly, people praised us for the violent attacks we made to have to defeat our enemies. Have you been allowed into district 13 yet? no, I am glad though, I hated always living underground, I was allowed to go hunting with Gale during our break we were allowed to go out and bring back food for 13. Coin and I never got along, I never wanted to do what she said. We had our schedules for the day printed on our arms. Most of the time I just sat in the closet. My sister, Prim and my mother worked in the hospital. My sister was a great healer, I never had that talent, someone who was really sick or badly injured would come in and I would leave, I didn’t handley people being really ill or injured while Prim dove in and did everything to help my mother. What was the Battle school like? You were so young when you were brought there.
I didn’t like it at all, I was always being pushed so hard on, being accelerated faster than anyone and feeling very isolated. I was picked on by kids all my life. I had Stilson at school who got injured really badly after trying to attack me. The first day my monitor was removed, off to a great start. What’s a monitor? They used to put it in us when we were young to determine if we were smart enough and not too violent or to caring. If we were the right combination of traits we would be offered the chance to go to
battle school and possibly become a commander to destroy the buggers. I was trained by Mazer Rackham when I went to command school. The first time we met each other we didn’t talk at all and then we fought against each other. After that I had to play games that Mazer Rackham made to test me. He said he would not go easy on me, he wanted to see if he could break me so that if I wasn’t broken by him I would be the great commander. On my final test, I was told it was just a game, I had a whole group of people watching me. I didn’t care about winning the game, I sent the command fleet into the bugger fleet and it all blew up. My team had won, only it wasn’t just a game it actually was the real thing. I was commanding real people, My team and I really defeated the buggers. Everyone had tears of joy in their eyes. After we defeated the buggers I was not allowed on earth until now. My dear sister, Valentine, came to the planet I was on and asked me if I wanted to go on an expedition to the bugger planet with her, I told her I would, but it was for me, I wanted to get to learn about the buggers that I had destroyed. What was your experience with the Hunger Games and the uprising?”
“Everyone in district 12 dreads the reaping, only one person on our entire village survived the games so we always know that there is a very high chance of our contestants not winning. My sister who was only 12 was picked and I volunteered to take her place. I was very protective of her, after our father died my mother fell into a deep depression and I had to take care of all of us. My relationship with her wasn’t wasn’t the best. Both times I was in the Hunger Games it was brutal. Peeta and I were never supposed to go back into the games again. It was the seventy-fifth hunger games and there is always a twist to the games every twenty-five years. That year, it was previous hunger games victors that were picked. Peeta and I made allies with the other people and in the end there was a master plot to get the victors out of the games and bring them to district 13. Plutarch, the head game maker, who replaced Seneca Crane for allowing Peeta and I to both win the first hunger games together was executed. We threatened to eat berries that were poison, and would kill us almost immediately so he made the announcement that we would both win. Halfway through our first time in the games, we were told we could pair up with the person who was  from our district if we were both still alive. I found Peeta almost dead after he managed to camouflage himself very well, he used to frost cakes at the bakery so he was great with art. He was taken by the capitol in the second game while I was pulled out into district 13 where I became the Mockingjay making commercials trying to get other districts to rebel. We got Peeta back and a couple other victors back. Peeta was brainwashed to hate me and it took him awhile to learn that I was not a mutt in the first hunger games. We finally got into the capitol and got district two to stop siding with them. I was going to President Snow’s mansion to kill him. All of the children from the capitol were there, he figured that since there were children outside of his house we wouldn’t hurt him. There were these boxes almost looking like presents that dropped on the ground and it was like a bomb went off. My sister was there, I don’t know how or why, I saw her a couple seconds before the bomb went off and that was the last time I saw her. I’m so sorry about your sister Katniss, I know she was special to you, my sister, Valentine, and I have always been close” said Ender. Katniss went on with her story: “ When President Snow was captured I was supposed to shoot an arrow through his heart in front of everyone, instead I shot Coin our president of thirteen. I talked with Snow earlier and I knew that Coin did not have good intentions for the rest of 13. I thought that Coin would be just as bad as Snow was so I took her out. Since then I have lived in district 12 with Peeta. We have two children a boy and a girl. Do you want a tour of 12? Sure. When do you go back to your colony? In two weeks.”
Katniss smiled and started to walk to the woods and eventually back to her house where Ender met her family and the two of them now knew each other, and knew that when Ender would have his next leave once he returned to his colony that they would visit each other again. Maybe this time Katniss would come visit him, hopefully by then she would be allowed to travel to more places than just district 12.

  2. Summer reading comments for: Ender and Katniss` first meeting.

    1. My person reaction was it was really well thought out. I felt like I was really in the book. I remember when you mentioned the monitor that ender had in him which showed the government who was a genious and was able to go to battleschool.

    2. The setting I felt was best described was when you described your relationship with her sister. The line I liked was “My sister was there, I don`t know how or why, I saw her a couple of seconds before the bomb went off and that was the last time I saw her.” That seemed like a strong sentence, when you said ‘That was the last time I saw her” It hit me that her sister died right in front of her eyes.

    3. The conversation did feel aunthentic. When you were talking about his family, it sounded very natural and when she brought him over to meet her family, the description you made after seemed very natural.
